Reliability Trials

Prior to each road season, the club promotes four reliability trials starting from the Jubilee Clock in Weymouth. The distances start at 50km and progress through 50m and 100km to the final 100m event. Generally these are spaced at fornightly intervals and dates will be published on the events page.

For winter 2008/09 some changes are proposed and will be posted here when finalised.

There are some basic rules, reproduced below, designed to prevent the event becoming a mini road race and riders are requested to use bikes with mudguards if the weather is likely to be inclement.

Rules

50 km Reliability Trial Route (guide 2 1/2 or 3 hours)

Start Jubilee Clock, Weymouth, 0900. Proceed north along sea front to join Dorchester Road. In approx. 4 km, turn left (Mill Street/Watery Lane) and at T junction left on to B3159. Climb lower part of Goulds Hill and turn left at SP to Friar Waddon/Coryates. Proceed to Portesham. At T junction, right to climb Portesham Hill. Take 2nd left on minor road. First left - Little Bredy Farm, care at bottom of descent. Continue through Little Bredy to Long Bredy and at T junction turn right and continue through Litton Cheney. (Do not take RH to Askerswell here) After approx 3 km (passing White Horse Inn on left) turn right to Chilcombe (possibly broken sign) at cross roads. Cross A35 - care and descend to Askerswell. Proceed through village to Spyway Inn. At T junction, turn right and climb hill. After passing O.S. trig point, turn right. Proceed along old roman road and at T junction (essentially straight on) continue to cross roads where turn right. At T junction, turn right to join A35. First left to T junction where left to join B3159. Continue through Martinstown to Weymouth. At T junction, right to join A354 and continue along Dorchester Road to sea front and Jubilee Clock.

50 Mile Reliability Trial Route (guide 3, 3 1/2 or 4 hours)

START 0900 prompt at the Jubilee Clock Weymouth. Proceed along Dorchester Road, left at Mill Street joining B3159 and continue to Winterbourne Abbas where right on to A35. First left after 500 yds to cross roads where left on to roman road. Follow road to Maiden Newton where left on to A356 towards Crewkerne. Turn left at Tollerdown Gate on to B3163 for Beaminster. Turn left in Beaminster on to A3066 to Bridport. Proceed through Bridport to coast road B3157 and continue on this road to FINISH at the Jubilee Clock.

100 km Reliability Trial Route (guide 4, 4 1/2 or 5 hours)

Proceed north along sea front, join Dorchester Road and in approx 4 km turn left (Mill Street/Watery Lane). At T junction, left on to B3159. Proceed to the outskirts of Martinstown where turn right and first left. Cross A35 and at next cross roads, either straight over on unclassified road which may be roughly surfaced or (turn left to Bradford Peverell and in village by church, turn right, proceed under railway to A37 where turn right). Take first left on minor road and first left. Descend hill to T junction where left on A352. Proceed through Cerne Abbas and Minterne Magna. At Dogbury Gate, turn left at signpost to Leigh. Proceed to Leigh and Yetminster. At T junction, right. After approx 2 km, turn right at signpost to Beer Hackett. Proceed to A352 where left and right to join A3030.

At Caundle Marsh, fork right towards Holwell and at triangle (Barns Cross), bear/turn right to Glanvilles Wootton. At T junction (by War Memorial) turn left on B3146 and take first right. Proceed to Middlemarsh, straight over cross road to T junction where left on A352. Proceed south through Lyons Gate, Cerne Abbas to Charminster. At cross roads in Charminster, turn left (East Street). Continue to T junction where right. Take first left to Frome Whitfield. Cross B3142 and at T junction, left and straight over roundabout (A35) to Stinsford.

At cross roads, right to Lower Bockhampton. At T junction, left through West Stafford. At T junction, (Tenantrees) take right. Go under railway and in West Knighton at left hand bend by church turn right. Proceed to next T junction where right on to A352. Take next left to pass Whitcombe Stables. At cross roads, straight over and descend to Coombe Valley Road and take left at T junction. At roundabout, turn right on to A353. Proceed along Preston Beach Road to finish at Jubilee Clock

100 miles Reliability Trial (guide 8 hours)

From the Jubilee Clock, proceed east along Preston Beach Road (A353). Turn left at Chalbury Corner, Preston, on to Littlemoor Road, taking first right on to Coombe Valley Road. At top of hill, turn left at cross-roads and continue for about 1 mile to first right turn by golf course. Go down hill to take first right (after Higher Came Farm) to A352 and turn left towards Dorchester. At first roundabout, take exit to West Stafford via bypass and turning off left to go through West Stafford village. After the 'Wise Man' pub on left, continue to take left at Tenantrees and then take left at fork to Woodsford. Continue straight through to Moreton and Wool. At Wool, turn right on to main A352, across level crossing and immediately left. After cafe on right, turn left on minor road to Stoborough. After about 4.5 miles, turn left at 'T' junction to main A351 at Stoborough. At main road turn left to Wareham. In Wareham, cross bridge over river, through traffic lights, down to major roundabout, on up flyover over railway. Turn left at mini roundabout and keep on this road (station on left) for about 5 miles to main A35. Turn left at A35, on through roundabout to Bere Regis, then turn left (minor road to Wool direction). After about 1 mile, at brow of hill, turn right and continue to B3390. Turn left and then right through Tincleton and carry on to join main A35 at Stinsford roundabout. Take second exit to Dorchester and immediately right up sharp little hill on minor road. After half a mile join B3143 (Piddle Valley road). Turn right up B3143 and after about 9 miles, turn in road one mile past Alton Pancras (there is a sign post to Henley on the left).

Turn and retrace course (careful not to take A31 at Bere Regis). After Moreton, turn left on B3390 to Warmwell Cross roundabout then take the A 353 back to Weymouth to finish at the Jubilee Clock.
